Chemo & Immunotherapy - Interplay
Chemotherapy is the first line of treatment used for cancer patients along with surgery. Various combinational strategies are employed to counter the progression of the disease but as the tumor progresses it acquires drug resistance and limits its efficacy. The cancer cells develop evading mechanism to escape the cytotoxic effects of drugs, rendering them ineffective. The major reasons of development drug resistance include selective gene amplifications at the cellular level and changes in genes in some cancer cells. Additionally, the progressive disease causes change in tumor microenvironment leading to immunosuppression enabling the cells to bypass the immune check. Overall, this leads to an unrestricted progression of the disease.
Under such conditions, immunotherapeutic agents can play a significant role to work synergistically with chemotherapy to generate favorable outcomes. Let’s find out how?
