Diabetes mellitus: the success pathway of stem cell therapy

Currently, healthcare system is facing variety of challenges globally; finding an effective diabetes treatment is one of them. Diabetes is the simplest version of the metabolic diseases with very remote risk factors; which are yet to be pinpointed. The symptoms of this mysterious disease can be controlled but cannot be cured completely. However, the promises made by science of regenerative medicines and stem cells, have given a new hope to the medical fraternity.                  Stem cells are the unique precursor cells of the body, with the great potential to differentiate into variety of cells, on demand. This property of stem cells can as well be applied to the diseases like diabetes, wherein human body is in crisis of insulin producing beta cells; more commonly known as the pancreatic cells. This facet of regenerative medicine has sparked great interest in many scientists in order to achieve a hallmark therapy for diabetes with the hel...

Millions of people across the world experience heel pain. How should we determine if it’s plantar fasciitis ? As you get older, your risk of developing this condition doubles. However, don’t let the heel pain hold you back from active life.  This article will make you understand the specific symptoms of plantar fasciitis and the various modalities to treat this condition naturally.  What are the symptoms of plantar fasciitis?  There are many causes for your heel pain. However, studies reveal that plantar fasciitis is the most common one.  There is a ligament named plantar fascia. It runs through the foot from the heel. This ligament can balance your foot’s arch while walking or running.  If your heel pain experiences plantar fasciitis, you will then undergo the following symptoms: Pain below the heel Worsening pain after a long duration of inactivity especially waking up in the morning or getting up after sitting for a long tim...

The Dawn Of A New Era Of Regenerative Medicine: Tissue Engineering Comes Of Age

The Dawn Of A New Era Of Regenerative Medicine: Tissue Engineering Comes Of Age   The field of regenerative medicine reached a remarkable milestone recently when four women regained full sexual function after the successful implantation of lab-grown vaginas created from their own cells. The women, aged thirteen to eighteen, were born with a rare medical condition called Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome (MRKHS) which left them with an abnormal or missing vagina. Each woman underwent a newly engineered procedure that involved taking samples of the patient's own cells and growing them into tissue. This tissue was then placed on a scaffold that was hand-sewn with collagen-like fibers and uniquely shaped to fit each woman’s vaginal cavity. Once the organ fully matured, it was implanted into a canal in each woman’s pelvis, along with the hand-sewn scaffolding. Within six months, the biodegradable scaffolding dissolved and, in each of the four women, the lab-grown vaginas began fun...

Scientists discover bioengineered hybrid muscle fiber for regenerative medicine

Scientists discover bioengineered hybrid muscle fiber for regenerative medicine  Washington [US], February 28 (ANI): Researchers through their study published in the journal, 'Advanced Materials' claimed that regeneration of muscle tissue can be achieved by joining direct cell reprogramming with natural-synthetic hybrid scaffold as structural support for the medication. Muscle is the largest organ that accounts for 40% of body mass and plays an essential role in maintaining our lives. Muscle tissue is notable for its unique ability for spontaneous regeneration. However, in serious injuries such as those sustained in car accidents or tumor resection which results in a volumetric muscle loss (VML), the muscle's ability to recover is greatly diminished. Currently, VML treatments comprise surgical interventions with autologous muscle flaps or grafts accompanied by physical therapy. Surgical procedures often lead to a reduced muscular function, and in some cases result in a comp...

Eye stem cell transplant to treat blindness bolsters retinal function in monkeys

Retinal cell transplants are considered to be an attractive approach for treating blindness. Question is, where do you source the cells?  An international research team of scientists from Singapore’s Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York and Germany’s Eye Clinic Sulzbach is using a type of stem cell in the eye to grow the pigmented layer of retina that’s essential for vision. The approach is showing promise in monkeys. The findings suggest that these retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) stem cell-derived RPE, or hRPESC-RPE, may be a useful source for cell replacement therapies to treat RPE-related blindness caused by diseases such as macular degeneration, the researchers suggest. The results are published in the journal Stem Cell Reports. RPE is a layer of tissue that supports the neurosensory retina and is critical for vision. An estimated 200 million people live with diseases associated with RPE dysfunction, incl...

Donate Stem Cells And Give A Blood Cancer Patient A Second Shot At Life

Most of the blood cancer patients require a blood stem cell transplant to survive, especially those who cannot be treated with chemotherapy. In India, we see almost a lakh new cases of blood disorders each year and India ranks third highest in reported cases of blood cancer, after the US and China. This growing burden is a serious concern for public health administrators in India and it is important to create awareness about the condition and treatment options available. What most people are unaware of is that blood cancer can be managed, and a patient can have a second chance at life with the treatment options available. Most of the patients require a blood stem cell transplant to survive, especially patients who cannot be treated with chemotherapy. Worldwide India has the highest ratio of searches on transplantations not resulting in a match as only 0.03 per cent of the Indian population has registered as potential blood stem cell donors, which is significantly lower th...
