Sonali Bendre is suffering from Metastatic Cancer?

Bollywood actor Sonali Bendre recently revealed that she has been diagnosed with metastatic cancer. The 43-year-old, who has starred in films like  Hum Saath Saath Hain, Sarfarosh, Duplicate  and  Kal Ho Na Ho,  released a statement that read: “Sometimes when you least expect it, life throws you a curveball. I have recently been diagnosed with high-grade cancer that has metastasized, which we frankly did not see coming. A niggling pain led to some tests, which led to this unexpected diagnosis. My family and close friends have rallied around me, providing the best support system that anyone can ask for. I am very blessed and thankful for each of them.” “There is no better way to tackle this than to take swift and immediate action. And so, as advised by my doctors, I am currently undergoing a course of treatment in New York. We remain optimistic and I am determined to fight every step of the way. I’m taking this battle head-on, knowing I have the strength of my fam...

Microbots Deliver Stem Cells in the Body

The astonishing thing about stem cells is that they can be coaxed, in the laboratory, into becoming nearly any kind of cell—from bone marrow to heart muscle. That remarkable capability has for years kept scientists busy tinkering with stem cells and injecting them into animal models in an attempt to grow and replace damaged tissue.   Such scientists have received a ton of attention in that line of work. But there’s a smaller group of researchers working, to far less fanfare, on a different part of the stem cell challenge: how to deliver those cells to the body’s hard-to-reach places. Researchers typically deliver stem cells via injection—a needle. But that method can damage healthy tissue, especially when the target is a deep brain structure, or delicate vasculature, or the inner ear. A group out of Hong Kong announced this week that they had invented a new delivery tool using tiny, magnetically-controlled robots. The cell-carrying machines move noninvasively...

सबसे छोटे पंप से धमनियों के 90% ब्लॉकेज को किया गया ठीक

Patient with 90 Percent Blockage of Arteries Saved with Miniature Pump

Lethal Prostate Cancer Treatment May Benefit From Combination Immunotherapy

Researchers at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center and the Bloomberg~Kimmel Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy (BKI) released a study investigating the use of combination checkpoint immunotherapy in the treatment of a lethal form of advanced prostate cancer. The study suggested a genetic subset of prostate cancer may benefit from this form of immunotherapy. The study targeted AR-V7+ prostate cancer with a combination of two checkpoint blockers, ipilimumab and nivolumab, in 15 patients with this aggressive variant, first discovered at Johns Hopkins in 2014. This is the first clinical trial to target this specific form of prostate cancer, which can kill patients in only six to nine months and has inadequate treatment options. It is the first reported study of combination immunotherapy using both ipilimumab and nivolumab in prostate cancer. "This is the first prostate cancer study to be supported by the Bloomberg~Kimmel Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy since the in...

Roswell Park's Immunotherapy Center Produces Cancer Treatment Breakthroughs

Researchers with Roswell Park's Center for Immunotherapy are optimistic about a new approach that involves genetically arming stem cells that produce enhanced immune cells that can defend against cancer potentially for life. Since Roswell Park’s Center for Immunotherapy opened in 2009, researchers have produced several breakthroughs in cancer treatment. They include the SurVaxM vaccine to treat brain cancer (glioblastoma) that has shown promise in clinical trials. There is also the historic CimaVax trial now ongoing. That is a lung cancer vaccine that was developed in Cuba. Looking ahead, researchers are optimistic about a new approach that involves genetically arming stem cells that produce enhanced immune cells that can defend against cancer potentially for life. The FDA still needs to approve this trial, and Ride for Roswell funds are slated to support it. Source : https://goo.gl/Hwnmx4

Know About NIPAH Virus

Kerala is on high alert as the deadly virus called ‘NIPAH’ (NiV) which has already claimed 10 lives in the state including a nurse while providing care to infected patients. The worrying aspect of the virus is that it has a 70 % mortality rate, and causes severe diseases in both animals and humans. Nipah Virus infection in humans can exhibit itself in different forms, from showing no symptoms of infection (asymptomatic) to acute respiratory syndrome and lethal encephalitis. NIPAH virus was first identified in Malaysia and Singapore in 1998 and 1999. The pigs were the hosts of this virus but a fresh flare of Nipah Virus (NiV) has emerged in Kerala, in India where the hosts are fruit bats. Previous Outbreak in India: The disease was first reported in 2001 in Siliguri (West Bengal), claiming 45 lives out of 66 infected, and again six years later in 2007 in Nadia (West Bengal) where it claimed 5 lives out of 5 infected. What is Nipah Virus? Nipah virus (NiV) infection...

Turns out, sex may help fight against cancer!

In the battle against cancer, new study points out how sex and certain virus can help the fight against the deadly disease. As per a research conducted by The Ottawa Hospital, flu vaccine when combined with certain medications used to treat Erectile Dysfunction can help one wipe off the cancer cells that may be left after surgery. As per the study, this method may prove to be very effective as in the mice model, it helped reduce the spread of cancer by over 90 per cent. This is the world’s first clinical trial regarding the subject matter. "Surgery is very effective in removing solid tumours. However, we're now realizing that, tragically, surgery can also suppress the immune system in a way that makes it easier for any remaining cancer cells to persist and spread to other organs. Our research suggests that combining erectile dysfunction drugs with the flu vaccine may be able to block this phenomenon and help prevent cancer from coming back after surgery," said...

US Moves to Shut Down 2 Big Stem Cell Therapy Clinics

Federal authorities Wednesday moved to shut down two of the country’s most prominent for-profit providers of stem cell therapy, one of them a network of clinics with more than 100 offices in the United States, including several in the Bay Area. The Food and Drug Administration filed two complaints in federal court requesting permanent injunctions that would stop Florida-based U.S. Stem Cell Clinic and the California Stem Cell Treatment Center from marketing therapies. Both companies have previously been called out by the FDA for providing unproven, unapproved therapies that could put patients at risk. The injunction requests are an aggressive move by the FDA to patrol the consumer stem cell market. The agency has come under mounting pressure by scientists and patient advocates to increase oversight of the growing consumer market, which has been allowed to flourish for years. “In the two cases filed today, the clinics and their leadership have continued to disregard th...

FDA & DOJ seek injunctions on 2 key unproven Stem Cell Clinic firms

The DOJ and FDA are seeking permanent injunctions in federal court against two of the most widespread and influential of the for-profit, unproven stem cell clinic firms in the U.S. This story is breaking so I’ll have more later this week. The take home is that I see this action as a positive, probably historic turning point for dealing with the for-profit stem cell clinic problem in the U.S. Update: US Stem Cell says it intends to fight the DOJ in court. “One compliant (sic) was filed against U.S. Stem Cell Clinic of Sunrise, Florida, and its officers Kristin Comella and Theodore Gradel. A separate complaint was filed against Stem Cell Treatment Center of Rancho Mirage and Beverly Hills California, and its owners, Elliot Lander and Mark Berman.” What are these businesses? Shoot, where do I start? I just did a post earlier today on how US Stem Cell leadership was talking in a Facebook video publicly about what seemed to potentially be a dangerous GM stem cell-based...

Using Stem Cells to Restore Hearing and Build a Stronger Heart

Can stem cells restore hearing or create a more resilient heart? USC Stem Cell postdoctoral fellows Ksenia Gnedeva and Michaela Patterson are addressing these questions, with support from Eli and Edythe Broad fellowships. Gnedeva is exploring genes involved in the proliferation of sensory cells in the inner ear, with the goal of developing regenerative therapies for hearing loss. Specifically, she is looking at a group of genes and molecules called “Hippo,” which work together to sense the forces produced by developing tissues and restrict excess growth. Before arriving at USC, Gnedeva earned her bachelor’s degree in biology from Lomonosov Moscow State University in Russia, and obtained her PhD in developmental and cell biology from the Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute and the Koltzov Institute of Developmental Biology. She then completed four years of postdoctoral training in sensory neuroscience at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Rockefelle...
