For an elderly people, who are more prone to injuries due to falls and fractures; the resultant pain and suffering can be far beyond its impact. A simple fall can sometimes obligates the need for extensive surgery; which has to be compromised with the risk associated with it coupled with some other fracture related risks such as immobility, ulcers, clots and muscular atrophy.       

The incidence of these fractures have been most of the times connected with the brittle bone disorders such as osteoporosis; however recently scientists have as well confirmed the role of osteoarthritis in the increased risk of injuries or fractures due to unusual falling. Recently, a global longitudinal study of osteoporosis in women confirmed that, almost 40% of the population; who have had osteoarthritis, experienced 30% more falls and fractures because of it. While the actual cause behind this is not completely understood, scientists have found out some clues; which have been listed as follows:

·         Pain: - There are various studies that have confirmed that musculoskeletal pain at one or many places in our body can severely interfere with our ability to accomplish day to day activities. The study performed by the journal of American Medical Association has confirmed that  the severity of the pain is directly associated with one or the other form of Osteoarthritis.
·         Decreased Function: - People with osteoarthritis have risk factors such as decreased mobility, decreased productivity, muscle weakness and impaired balance that increase their exposure to fall or severe injury.
·         Post Traumatic Injury: - The injuries associated with post traumatic arthritis can be more due to worn out bone or cartilages due to their increased susceptibility to breakage. The injury can be due to anything such as sports injury, military injury, vehicle accidents, fall, etc.

Currently, anti inflammatory drugs can be offered to patients along with some hormonal supplements to manage their osteoarthritis and the pain associated with it. However, applications of these treatments came hand in hand with some other potentially dangerous side effects such as heart trouble, stroke, infections, etc. Fortunately, science and technology have come up till the point, wherein easy and effective alternative options are available in the form of stem cells treatment.

Stem cells are the promising candidates with the inherent possibilities to differentiate into cells of different origin. With the help of advanced medical technology, it is now possible to grow stem cells outside the body in the laboratory under controlled conditions and can be capitalized for treating variety of debilitating disorders such as but not limited to osteoarthritis.

It can be a breakthrough if these stem cells get stimulated with patient’s own platelet rich plasma. They can work faster for effective regeneration and reduced inflammation related to the disease.

Thus, preventing osteoarthritis is the only better choice to avoid the risk associated with the disease.

Federal authorities Wednesday moved to shut down two of the country’s most prominent for-profit providers of stem cell therapy, one of them a network of clinics with more than 100 offices in the United States, including several in the Bay Area.
